Ola Electric Announces $500 Million Investment To Set Up Asia’s Largest Battery Innovation Centre In Bengaluru

Ola Electric is an Indian company that develops and manufactures electric vehicles (EV) and charging stations. It was founded in 2017 as a subsidiary of ANI Technologies. The electric vehicles start-up is set to build Asia’s largest EV battery research and development facility in Bengaluru.

Ola Electric’s CEO Bhavish Aggrawal, on Monday, took to Twitter to announce the establishment of one of the largest, cutting-edge research and development facilities for electric vehicle batteries, namely the Battery Innovation Centre (BIC), in Bengaluru city. 

“Sharing something I’m personally very passionate about! Building a state of the art Battery Innovation Center (BIC) in Bangalore. BIC will be one of worlds largest, most advanced cell R&D facility. 500+ engineers & PhDs, $500mn investment,” read the tweet. “Will be up & running next month,” he added.

The BIC will comprise more than 165 of the most advanced lab equipment required in the research for developing EV batteries. The facility would house an entire set of procedures, including battery pack design, fabrication and testing, under one roof. 

The centre will also have an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy machine that will scan the raw materials used for cell production and conduct a quality check, and a cell protiline lab RH 10, making Ola the first Indian company to make electrodes for lithium ion (NMC) cells. It will also include a double planetary mixer that will help prepare the slurry for cathodes and anodes of Lithium ion cells, and a lab slot die coater which will be used to coat the slurry on the current collector.

Ola Electric has invested a whopping amount of $500 million in the construction of the BIC, and to facilitate the use of all the high-end lab equipment. It also plans to hire over 500 PhD holders, a team of engineers, and another 1000 research workers from all over India and other global research centres.
