“Kids, I’m going to tell you an incredible story: It’s the story of how two writers got lucky enough to make their dream TV show for nine seasons and now get to pass the torch to an inspired new creative team with their own incredible story to tell, the story of How I Met Your Father,” the show’s original creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas said in an official statement. They are returning as the executive producers, while Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, the dynamic writing duo of the popular NBC drama This Is Us are the creators of the spinoff.
Who hasn’t fallen for the charms of the iconic comedy – How I Met Your Mother? Nobody can deny that the legacy left behind by the show is legen..wait for it..dary! Whether it was the unique premise, the impeccable cast, the even better chemistry, or some really fine writing which left no loose ends in a story spanning nine years, the show was an instant hit, and stayed with the viewers much after the finale in 2013.
Well, if you’re someone who has watched countless reruns of your favourite episodes, the good news is that the the show is getting its very own spinoff titled, How I Met Your Father! The 10 episode sitcom is coming to Hulu, starring Hillary Duff, Chris Lowell, Francia Raisa, Tom Ainsley, Tien Tran and Suraj Sharma.
Hillary will be playing the character of Sophie – who is recounting the foibles and follies of her love life to her kids in the future, and how it all led to her eventual meeting with their father. Her story will be based in 2021, and the timeline will move back and forth, much along the lines of the original show. Sex and the City’s Kim Cattrall has come on board as the narrator – an older version of Sophie. The retelling of the classic – a group of friends manoeuvring through their love lives, with the emergence of Tinder, Twitter and Tiktok, lends the show a very contemporary yet nostalgic vibe. “I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie. I realize these are big shoes to fill and I’m excited to slip my 6 ½’s in there,” Duff had said earlier, when the project was announced. The shooting has already begun and the show is expected to premiere on Hulu in 2022.
Alongside the anticipation of the spinoff, HIMYF’s diverse casting has caught the eyes of netizens as well – depicting a more genuine picture of modern-day New York, as compared to HIMYM, which had an all-white cast. With actress Tien Tran being openly gay, both on and off-screen, fans are excited to see how her story will pan out in the show. Additionally, it has also been revealed that everyone in the cast will belong to varying socioeconomic backgrounds, with possibly nothing in common, until they come together to suffer the pitfalls of love and dating. Blending of such progressive sensibilities would make sure the spinoff establishes its distinct stance, while keeping the essence of the original alive.
Behind-the-scenes pictures of the shoot are already surfacing online, and fans are eager to know if Hillary’s Sophie will be a die-hard romantic just like our Teddy boy? Or are we getting Barney 2.0 soon? Only time (and Hulu) can tell!
